RECYCLING AT MEADOW LAKES

This is our home and we want to keep it Green.

Reycling also saves money since anything that does not go into the landfill doesn't have to be carted there at a cost of $100 per load.

This page describes Single Stream RecyclingOur vendor who takes our contributions to recycling has a location where almost all items can go. Where formerly we could only recycle certain plastics, our vendor now has access to a recycling facility that will take all types of plastic.

It is important to note that in the US, we throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Years' Day than at any other time of year.  This is the time to consider ways to cut back on holiday waste.  Following Meadow Lakes recycling procedures will contribute positively to reducing holiday waste.

Below is a description of what and how to recycle your used glass, metal, plastic, cardboard and paperPlease note, all must be clean!!

 COMMINGLED RECYCLABLES

This means:

Clean glass, metal, and plastic containers

If bags are needed, use cornstarch bags provided by Housekeeping - ext. 6872.

Glass means clean food jars and bottles only.

Metal means clean food and drink cans, aluminum cans, foil, and pie tins, also tin and steel cans

Plastic means clean plastic bottles and jars, tubs and lids #1 and #7

Lids are OK, - clean tops and lids for all bottles and jars.  Just take them off and recycle separately.

Aerosol cans now qualify but they must be empty.

All must be clean!

POP TABS

MEADOW LAKES CONTRIBUTES APPROXIMATELY Twenty-Five  POUNDS OF POP TABS TO RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

EACH YEAR

For more than 7 years, Meadow Lakes residents have collected Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House.

Ronald McDonald House provides a "home-away-from-home" for families

of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.  One means of support for this charity is money earned from recycling “Pop Tabs,” the closures found on soda and beer cans, cat food, Ensure, soup, and vegetables, to name a few.  We ask residents to twist the tab off of every can they use and to put it in the “house” at their mail stop.  Even our letter carrier, Ray, does this for us, and so do many of our children!

We collect an average of 25 pounds each year and with your help would like to increase that amount.  The good news is that on October 7, 2009 we turned in 40 pounds of pop tabs--our largest contribution ever!

Thanks to all for contributing in this simple, effective way.

 PAPER AND CARDBOARD

These items qualify:

Clean newspapers, magazines, stationery, envelopes, file folders, paper bags, and clean, flattened cardboard boxes, beverage cartons, telephone books

Clean chipboard: cereal boxes, shoe boxes, gift boxes, paper towel rolls and the like

Place shredded paper in a paper bag

 DO NOT TIE WITH STRING

Used Batteries can be turned in to the Concierge.

Housekeeping accepts for recycling electronic items, old phones, TV's, radios, and ink cartridges.

Everything not listed is trash

If trash is mixed with recyclables, or if containers are not clean, the entire load is contaminated and becomes trash.

Here is what we cannot recycle:

Food waste, films, plastic bags, plastic wrap, styrofoam containers of all kinds, mirror glass, window glass, ceramic cups and plates, knives, forks, spoons, light bulbs, drinking glasses, clay flower pots, plastic toys, laundry baskets and other large plastic containers or dishpans. And, as described above, electronics, light bulbs, and batteries.

Meadow Lakes residents

recycle with intelligence!
