Croquet: Pennswood vs. Meadow Lakes

Croquet competition against Pennswood Village, a CCRC located in Newtown, PA, took place at Meadow Lakes on September 15. Meadow Lakes players included Don Nash and Sig Nette, Gloria Mineo and Eunice Gallena, Audrey Jasper and Beverly Cassel,Tony Baionno and Glenn Brewer, and Don Nash and Jean Kelly. Meadow Lakes posted a resounding win, taking four of the five games played.  Spirits were not dampened by the light rain that occurred and much laughter ensued when the sprinklers unexpectedly came on!

In June, croquet competition took place at Pennswood. Meadow Lakes was in good form and this year bested their hosts, three games to two.  Pat Kendall, chair of the croquet team, advises that the group had a wonderful time at Pennswood.  The team of eight included Tony Baionno, Frank Elliott, Eunice Gallena, Jean Kelly, Gloria Mineo, Paul Rockman, Phil Sproul, and Pat Kendall.

Hats off to all of you!  Thanks for upholding our reputation!

Croquet Mixers

With a gallery of onlookers, new resident Siri Willits and Don Nash each easily put a ball through the wicket.

Croquet Mixers take place on three holidays:  Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.  All, without regard to experience, are welcome to play.  For those who want to play often, Audrey Jasper gives lessons on Tuesday mornings.  Just check the weekly schedule for times.

BOCCE

At Meadow Lakes we enjoy all kinds of games. We've been told it is important to keep the mind as well as the body in top condition. Both physical and mental activity keep us happy and well-rounded. Croquet, swimming, Bocce, and Fitness Center activities keep us physically fit--to say nothing of the long walks we take through and around our buildings.

Frank Elliott introduced Bocce to us and Jerry Gottesman now guides the Bocce games in fair weather.

To deflect flies and mosquitoes during play, some of our athletes carry a sheet of

 MORE GAMES

Activities such as bridge, Scrabble, and Mah Jongg are popular. Many residents play bridge on an informal basis, others have regular bridge dates, and twice a month the best players play Duplicate Bridge. The duplicate group is filled and participation is by invitation. New residents seeking to play bridge might get started by getting a four-some together.  As others hear that you play, they are sure to call on you.

Evie Young teaches Mah Jongg, so if that is your interest, do call her.

A chess group led by several talented residents meets monthly. Their meeting times are included on the calendar that is distributed door-to-door.

On many Wednesday afternoons when his work is over, Jerry Bruce, the Meadow Lakes driver, teaches us to play pool.  In case you haven't found it yet, the pool table with plenty of cues, is in the Lobby of Hallway 48-L.

Chris Harman leads training in using Wii Sports in Game Room 13L on some Wednesdays.  Watch the weekly calendar for times and dates.

GAME ROOM OPENS

The grand opening of Game Room in lower 13 was held on Tuesday, November 24, 2008.  Executive Director Jay Zimmer was on hand with his scissors to cut the ribbon and roll out the first bowling ball to initiate the room, the new TV, and the Wii Sports.  Residents and staff turned out for the occasion, enjoying many laughs as we tried our hand at the sports.  Golf, Baseball, Bowling, and boxing are available.  Chris Harman is already planning a Wii tournament.

The Game Room will continue to be open for our pleasure. Residents are asked to accompany guests using the room.

Here's Jay with his ceremonial scissors recounting the events that led up to this day.  Glenn Brewer, Forum President, at right, was also on hand to celebrate the opening.

JUST FOR FUN

Readers of The Meadow Lark for many years enjoyed puzzles originated by Tady Hunter. Recently we found some of Tady's puzzles and thought our readers would enjoy them, too. Here we introduce Tady's  "Book Titles and Authors."

Tady said:  "There are some who claim that PUNS are the lowest form of humor; others within earshot just groan, scowl, or leave the room. For those who enjoy punning and would like to create their own fictitious library, start with an author's name, last name, and an initial if needed.

"I introduced puns to upper elementary students and to my amazement, one ten-year old produced, "Jumping Off Cliffs by Hugo First," said Tady.

To add to your pleasure, we have some current topics to be defined with your puns. See how you can do providing an author for each of the titles below:

Singing Around the Piano

Olympic Events

Summer Fruit

Editor's Note:  We left these titles blank for a while but did not receive your answers.  Here is what we selected.

Singing Around the Piano  by Carrie O'Key

Olympic Events                 by Jim Nast

Summer Fruit                    by Walter Melon

Now please tell us what titles and authors you have to suggest.
